Kalbarri student Anzel van Niekerk wins WA Class Clowns at Melbourne International Comedy Festival

Jokes poking fun at her personal life and family relations have earned Anzel van Niekerk the title of funniest teen comedy act in Western Australia.

The 16-year-old Kalbarri District High School student was named the winner of the Western Australian Class Clowns final in Perth on March 4, making it 3 years running that a student from the Midwest has gone on to represent WA at the National Finals in Melbourne.

She was one of 5 student comedians from the Midwest who battled it out for a place in the final, which is to be held at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival on the 15th of April.

Her gig at the Class Clowns Geraldton heat at the start of the month was her first go at performing solo stand up comedy in front of a live audience.

“At first I was really scared and nervous, but it was such a good experience and feeling,” she said.

“And when I put that first punch line out there and got that first laugh, I just knew it was going to be good night.

“I didn't think I was going to win. [But] when they called me to tell me I’d won, I was so stoked and happy as.”

And while she has only really just got into comedy in the last year, she said she has learn most of what she knows through watching stand up on YouTube and participating the odd workshop with The Comedy Emporium when they are in Kalbarri.

Through the competition Anzel was given the opportunity to work with professional Comedian Andy Saunders and said that he gave her some great feedback that she has now been able to work into her set.

Anzel’s prize includes being transported to the National Grand Final in Melbourne during the high profile Melbourne International Comedy Festival period for a chance to win $1,500 for herself and a $1,000 workshop package for her school.

“I am so bloody nervous to say the least, but also so excited,” she said.

“But when I get on that stage and touch the mic, everything will go away, and that will be my time to shine.”
