Hey, I’m Ellen! I am part of the The Comedy Emporium Writing Team, which means I get to write comedy and also perform on stage, double win! It’s so great being a part of the writing team as it means I can bring forth ideas from an initial set, put them out there to the group, workshop them, get feedback, and make the jokes even more awesome!
I got involved with The Comedy Emporium mainly because I was poached from Theatre 8! It started just as a little bit of fun but then I thought I would get on board because I really enjoyed it. Even though there was only a small crowd when I performed that night, I absolutely fell in love with performing on stage, so I had to get in touch with Julian to get me on board the team.
Writing for The Comedy Emporium is really important to me because making people laugh and making people happy is the best feeling ever. Being able to be a part of that happiness makes it all worth while. I never really thought about stand up comedy as something I would do, but I’m so glad I stuck at it, because it has been something I have really loved and enjoyed.
I have been lucky enough to be a part of the Class Clowns and Next Gen shows, and have met and worked with some really cool people. The Comedy Emporium is a really great team and they’re like a little family to me too, always so supportive and there to help each other out. Plus when I go to Perth for shows and get to talk and network with comedians there, everyone is always so cool and fun, and I’ve made some awesome friends along the way as well.
My favourite moment? Hmm… the emotional scarring. But in all seriousness, I have met and have had the chance to perform with so many talented and amazing people. Fringe Festival was a huge highlight, it was my first ever Fringe this year and it was huge! I got to hang out with all the wonderful people I had met over the course of the year, and it was really great to see everyone in an awesome festival atmosphere.
WHEN WILL YOU KNOW YOU HAVE MADE IT?
I think I’ll know when I’ve made it when my jokes are quotable, or can be made into memes, now that would be pretty awesome!
