Below is an overview of the ‘vision’ for two new creative spaces on Marine Terrace. Just like CityHive has created a focal point for a community of innovators, entrepreneurs and social change agents, Ministry could make our region’s creative talent and industries more visible.

The vision is to transform two empty buildings into space for ‘makers’ and ‘creators’ and young people to co-locate. Makerspaces are do-it-yourself community spaces where people can explore their creativity, collaborate, share knowledge and resources, and work on projects to develop ideas and ‘make stuff’. There are individual, community and economic benefits to encouraging co-location creative entrepreneurs, ‘makers’ and young people, as described in city of Greater Geraldton’s Vibrancy Strategy and Creative Community Plan.

The potential of these sites are incredible, thanks to the generosity of the owners with their terms, and the flexibility with what we can do with the spaces. They have already partnered with Pollinators to provide Yamaji Arts with an amazing, affordable space, so there is a demonstrably good relationship already.

Pollinators are already collaborating with our partners to develop the vision and secure further partners and funding to make this happen. We intend to operate the whole precinct as an ongoing non-profit ‘enterprise’ generating its own revenue and ongoing benefits with much reduced need for ongoing investment from public funds.

Partners include:

  • Geraldton Investments
  • Youth Focus and the Headspace consortium members
  • Panaceum
  • Euphorium Creative
  • Arts and Cultural Development Council

There are several separate components and spaces, and each may proceed without the other or at different stages, though the synergies are obvious.

  1. Ground Floor of 193 a Headspace for youth, co-locating youth services as well as spaces that young people really ‘own’ and can have as their own.
  2. Top Floor of 193 ‘Maker’ space, very affordable spaces for artists, craft, engineering, music and other creative industries. This floor already has a large sound-proof room that could serve as a recording space, great natural light and divided by removable glass partitions. Spaces would be available for use by individuals or organisations on affordable 3 to 12-month licences.
  3. Front of 191 as ‘Gallery’ space, offering affordable gallery space to local arts organisations and artists e.g. ACDC. This would also be useful to showcase the products of the ‘makers’.
  4. Rear of 191 as ‘Performance’ space, offering very affordable, rustic performance space to local organisations and performers e.g. The Comedy Emporium.
  5. Rear of both buildings as ‘Parking’ space! There is commercial demand for secure day time parking for Government, office workers and surrounding retailers.

Some of our partners, sponsors and parking space renters are able to pay more, such that we can make other spaces more affordable. This is a key to the whole model working. This concept, operations, branding and exterior facade would complement other organisations and services nearby. Office, meeting and coworking space is available nearby at CityHive, coffee available at cafes, industrial ‘making’ equipment at Men’s Shed and display / shopfront space at Yamaji. There are also some private and government developments proposed nearby that will significantly enhance this precinct and complement Ministry of Creativity.
